Beaufort County Transit Ballot Initiative

Update: Passed on November 6, 2018. The vote was 57.96% yes and 42.04% no.
The South Carolina Community Alliance is working in close coordination with the Hilton Head Area Association of Realtors and the Beaufort County Association of Realtors on this critical campaign. Real Estate, Military, and Tourism are the major contributors to the economy in Beaufort County. Multiple businesses are closing on Hilton Head Island due to lack of workforce. Many workers are unwilling to commute to the Island any longer due to the traffic congestion and inadequate infrastructure. The Real Estate Industry will be hurt substantially if the existing bridges to Hilton Head are not replaced. The bridges have exceeded their life span and they are the only way on and off Hilton Head Island. Also, they are the only evacuation route in case of a hurricane. Due to the traffic congestion on Lady’s Island, citizens have been opposing commercial and residential projects. The Lady’s Island Corridor Traffic Improvements will alleviate the congestion and demonstrate the County’s ability to place appropriate infrastructure where needed to support development in those areas. Installation and repair of sidewalks and multi-use pathways at multiple locations within Beaufort County will provide safe walking routes to schools and improved access to residential communities. Current home values will increase if access to them is easier. Currently, The existing transportation infrastructure within the County of Beaufort and the cities and towns situated within the County (the ” municipalities” ) are inadequate to support the current and future transportation-related needs of the County and municipalities; and the County Governing Body finds that a one percent ( 1%) Transportation Sales and Use Tax and issue of general obligation bonds, if any, is the most equitable, affordable, efficient and expedient means of providing necessary financing to support, advance, develop and implement the transportation -related projects specified for this referendum. The South Carolina Community Alliance supports the passage of the Transportation Sales Tax referendum appearing on the ballot in November.
